Attached here is a back pack list of essentials. Check List for Back Pack Essentials o Bag(s) Back pack, if possible one with a bladder for one gallon water; waist bag. o Sleep bag and water proof cover (found water proof cover at military surplus) $3 something each, cheap for a dry sleep. Pillow—rolled up cheap blanket o Poncho, as large as possible to cover you and pack, I did find some back pack covers in a pretty bright blue…no don’t think that will work. o Tarps, not blue or silver, camouflage if available, if not brown. These can be used for a pup tent, setting up a regular tent takes time and effort, not quick to break down and pack away. o Nylon cord or heavy duty rope, you may have some of this in home. o Duct tape, small roll or piece of roll. o Food packed in waist bag is always on body, eating utensils plastic. They have ready to eat Chilli, Tuna, Tuna Salad, Rice, and more, if hungry you can eat without a microwave. Nutritional fruit bars for snack. Whatever you eat. o Packed inside back pack, oatmeal, powdered milk, powder Gator Ade, Instant rice, Instant potatoes, Beef Jerky 4 pieces to a sealed bag, Pop Tarts. (all in Seal-A-Meal) o Plastic cup with lid for shaking/mixing, I used old Tupperware tumbler with a tight lid. Plastic coffee cup, military lunch tray has a pan with handle for cooking and divided plate, found at surplus store. Old aluminum coffee pot with guts. Utensils for cooking, plastic spatula and spoon. Knife(s) for cooking and for general use, one in back pack and one on self. Can opener(s). Knife sharpening block. o Stove, Coleman Macro with fuel. Matches, in waterproof container. I packed 2 boxes kitchen matches and will have lighter(s). If building a fire…Bundle of litter knot, also in water proof bag. This can be bought at Lowes if you have no woods to gather. Some may be good fire starters, I don’t trust my luck. o Emergency blankets, WalMart has them for about $3 each, these are the silver ones that draw heat back to the body. I packed some of the hand warmers, toe warmers, the ones hunters use. They also have a body warmer. I have tried these, they do work. o Small camping shovel, folds. Hatchet. o Wind up Radio with light and alarm. Radio Shack has them for about $40. Needs no batteries. o Cap with mesh net to cover face, (again WalMart carries the netting) protection from bugs. Long sleeve shirt and long pants no matter the weather if in woods you need to be covered, you can use spray if you choose. o Water purification tablets are sold at WalMart, worth $4. I picked up 4 or 5 of the packs, has good directions for use, or you can use alternate method of sand, charcoal. National Geographic site has good instructions on purification. o Water, Stock, stock, stock, stock all you can. Put in back pack what you can carry or stash plenty. California has a severe drought. Learn more about catching rain water. You can have everything on the list but if you do not have water you will NOT NEED any of the above. o Documents, birth, death, SS, Driver License, marriage license, divorce papers home papers, insurance, DD214 copies of all you have need to show proof, Seal-a-Meal bag them if you can. Just make sure they are in plastic to stay dry. o Clothes---at least 3 pair thick socks, you can go without underwear but you are dependent on your feet if your using this back pack, be kind to your feet. Whatever you have room for and what your needs are in outer clothes. o Pair of good hiking boots, water repellent, I added two spary coats of sealer to make sure we stay dry. If you have extra room tie on an extra pair of sneakers or something, I don’t have any room left. o I bought some of the $1.50 solar sidewalk lights, packed 3 to each backpack, need use only one till it goes dead, when all used, wind up radio. I also have the head lamp which is good for hands free, strongly recommend. o Small bottle bleach, packed in something leak proof and resistant to bleach. o Flashlights/batteries. Don’t advise candles in the woods. o Salt/Pepper for spice o Bible and SW40 for safety, 380 back up, hollow. o I tried to keep everything in plastic for weight purposes, and when fitting the pack on it is heavy, but not so after positioning and securing. Tied sleep bag to top of pack. o This is my list hope it helps you to not forget anything. After reading it you have any suggestions or see I missed something, please speak up, this is new to all of us…
