Attention, LP nominees (regardless of State or Commonwealth). An - TopicsExpress

Attention, LP nominees (regardless of State or Commonwealth). An LP candidate in Florida is currently telling potential donors were poised to win this one (or wording close to that). Ignore for a moment that his main reason for this startling claim actually makes it -harder- for him to win. His reason is that there is only one Beltway-party nominee in the race; but its a lot harder to get 50% plus one of the vote than to get 33-1/3% of the vote plus one. But, again, ignore that for the moment. My objection is that, in the absence of **highly** unusual circumstances, its virtually impossible at this point for an LP nominee for a major office to win a partisan race (in Texas, the single-punch straight-ticket option alone dooms most of our candidates). And, while claims of electability supposedly fire up the troops, the reality is that once the votes are counted, the result of unrealistic promises is a --major, major-- let down once the votes are counted. We have, over the years, lost many good activists because of these post-election let-down. Ironically, if we had kept them, we might actually -be- in a position to win some major races. So, please, dont make claims or promises the data do not support. One guideline: unless you have, already in the bank, at least $1 for every registered voter in your jurisdiction, do not claim youre going to win. Do not even claim that you -can- win (again, unless there are legitimate other considerations, such as an endorsement by virtually every major newspaper in your jurisdiction, or the deaths of every other candidate weeks before the election, or something else of at least that magnitude). You may think it will help you but it will not -- and it will damage the LP (see above). I will not post here my essay on the subject, as it includes a current LPT nominee, but I will send it to anyone who specifically requests it. Jeff Daiell
