Attention Ohio residents that care about the future of music, art, and physical education in their public schools! Librarians, media specialists, nurses, counselors, and social service workers are also in jeopardy. On Tuesday November 11th, the Ohio State Board of Education will vote on whether to approve a change to the Administrative Code. Currently the code requires 5 of these 8 specialists to be available per 1000 students. The change would eliminate the requirement entirely. Imagine how awful school could be without any of those teachers and supportive staff. Write to your State School Board representative right away! Please share this message! You can learn more about this issue here: slideshare.net/SusanYutzey/stand-up-for-your-child-presentation-41081030 There is a list of Ohio Board of Education members and their emails here: curmudgucation.blogspot/2014/11/ohoi-gunning-for-specialists.html and here is what I wrote to AJ Wagner [email protected], please feel free to copy and paste this for your own letter: As an Ohio citizen, I am concerned that the State Board of Education is rushing to adopt the proposed changes in the Operating Standards without due consideration as to how these changes will affect teaching and learning. The State Board of Educations goal should be to create a quality public school system, not strip expectations of what schools should provide. It is widely acknowledged that the education of the whole child requires specialists in the full range of human development and academic disciplines. Physical education, music, and art may not be on the standardized tests, but their availability provide additional opportunities to learn. A child can better focus on learning facts and figures if hes had exercise and a chance to interact with classmates in gym class. Music education enhances a childs ability to learn in general, but especially mathematics (harmonics and counting rhythm), and it allows children a chance to work out their noisy energy constructively and cooperatively interact with their peers. Art allows for tactile learning and the translation of an image from mind to matter, as well as observation of proportions, geometry, perspective, and patterns. A school nurse could save a childs life, as could the intervention or guidance from a counselor or social worker. Librarians and media specialists teach children how to seek and find the knowledge they need, how to use computers or a books index, or where to find another book by their favorite author or about their favorite subject. These specialists are critical for educating children that are curious about learning, engaged with their curriculum, and able to apply their knowledge and skills to their lives and our future workforce.
