Attention Students! Show us your writing talent! The writing should reflect diversity or multiculturalism in the community where all individuals are recognized, valued and respected. Help the North Iowa Diversity Appreciation Team (NIDAT) celebrate diversity with your participation. Prizes will be awarded to first and second place entries for each level: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The North Iowa Diversity Appreciation Team is seeking poems, short fiction, or non-fiction writing that expresses what diversity means to you. Examples could include, but should not be limited to Black, Latino, Asian American/Pacific Islander, or Native American historical events or culture, Disability Awareness, etc. Contest Rules: 1. Elementary school writers should limit their entries to 500 words; middle school writers should limit their entries to 750 words; high school writers should limit their entries to 1000 words. 2. Individual entries will only be accepted; no group work, please. 3. A typed, double-spaced, submission is preferred. 4. Your first and last name, school and grade must be identified on the back of your submission or it will not be accepted. Home address must also be included if entry is not from the Mason City Public School system. 5. You may enter only one submission to each contest (there is also a contest for visual artists). 6. Your submission (Please address it to Diversity Writing Contest) must be delivered to your principal or mailed to Hal Minear, 1515 South Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, IA 50401 by Wednesday, February 4, 2015, to be considered by NIDAT’s judging panel. 7. All entries will become the property of NIDAT. Awards: All submissions will be published in the NIDAT publication, The Bridge: Embracing Diversity through Art and Writing, vol. 8, 2015. Winners and sponsors will receive a free copy. Additional copies may be purchased. First and second place prizes will be awarded for each level during a reception honoring participants of both the written and visual arts contests on March 5, 2015, from 5 – 6 p.m. at the Music Man Square.
