Attention UUCOC Friends and Family: Support needed for the refugee children coming to Dallas Alert: We only have 2 Sundays to collect these items! Please spread the word. UUCOC Social Justice Ministry co-chairs Judy Watkins and Lemlem Berhe attended the meeting held at the Southwest Center Mall on Thursday, July 3rd, to learn what we can do to help the two thousand children, between the ages of 12-17, expected in be housed in Dallas County. The meeting was held by Oak Cliff Quick Response (OCQR) and was well attended by representatives from churches, agencies, and other non-profits of various kinds, as well as some businesses and elected officials or their representatives. OCQR is coordinating with Catholic Charities to avoid duplicating services. Lemlem and Judy volunteered with several other groups to collect Hygiene Packs for boys & girls. The goal is to fill two thousand baskets, one for each child, with these products and a LUV Bear. The Hygiene Packs would include such products as soap, tissues, toothbrushes & toothpaste, sanitary napkins, hand soup and/or hand sanitizer, shampoo, combs, and brushes. There is also a need for books in either Spanish or in Spanish and English. Donations by check should be made payable to Catholic Charities. Other organizations are collecting blankets, pillows, backpacks, socks, and underwear. (This does not stop anyone from donating these items.) Children’s Activities: The goal here is to have children make “Love” cards, bilingual, if possible, to welcome these refugees to our country. Several organizations will be involved. Starting on July 16th, the collections will be brought to SW Center Mall and on July 19th, kids will be sorting and packing the baskets. We will pass on additional information via Susan Ammons if any of our children are interested in helping pack the baskets.
