Attitudes are Contagious Like yawning or the common cold in March, attitudes are contagious and yours can spread through the workplace at any time. So, take a moment to ask yourself: Is yours worth catching? How do you influence those you work and communicate with on a daily basis? It stands to reason that, if your attitude can spread through the workplace, you’d want to keep it as optimistic as possible. But, with all the twists and turns within the industry and in our personal lives, how can you manage to stay positive all the time? Here are 7 rules that may help: 1. Wait to Worry: Recently, researchers at the University of Cincinnati have found that a full 85% of the things we worry about never happen. Further, they found that 79% of us surprise ourselves with how well we are able to turn the 15% that does happen into more favorable situations. Take a moment to think: What were you worrying about this time last year? Was it worth it? As Charles Spurgeon once said, “anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, but only empties today of its strength.” 2. Keep a Gracious Attitude: Name your blessings and jot them down. It may seem cliché at first, but research has found that no fewer than 1,000 things go right for you on a daily basis. Sure, most of these things seems small (your car started, your computer booted up when you hit the power button) but think of how much of an inconvenience these things are during those times they don’t work. Every day, the world actually conspires to help you reach your goals! 3. Your Health is Your Greatest Wealth: If you lose your health, you lose everything. Make time to exercise – when you exercise your body release endorphins, endorphins trigger positive feelings, reduce stress, ward off anxiety and boost self-esteem. , eat healthy and catch up on sleep. 4. Be Joyful and It Will Boomerang: You can call it Karma, the Golden Rule, Paying it Forward, the Space Cowboy or the Gangster of Love, but the truth remains: do something for someone and it will come back to you. 5. Learn When to Say “No”: We all have limits to our time, energy and interests. As much as we would like to always be able to help others when they ask for it, if we spread ourselves too thin, we aren’t actually helping anybody. Help when you can, give when you should, but always make sure there’s enough of you left over. 6. Understand the Power of Discipline.: Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anyone else expects of you. Discipline today means you will enjoy life more tomorrow. As Augusta Kantra said, “discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.” 7. Surround Yourself With Positive People: Since attitudes are contagious, you can also catch the attitudes of those around you. So, find people who will challenge you, believe in you and inspire you to improve to keep the cycle going. Once you begin incorporating these rules into your daily routine, you should find yourself becoming increasingly optimistic, grateful, and positive. In turn, this can easily spread to those around you, leading to improved work relationships and fostering an entire culture of positivity. A sense of satisfaction and significance comes from understanding who you are and how you can best bring value to every endeavor in life.
