Audhubillahhiminashshaytanirrajeem BismillahhirRahmanirRahim. And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it [in a like manner]. Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant. [Quran, 4:86] Responsibility and Righteousness Can Construct a New Order A core theme of Surat Al-Ma’idah is a call to fulfill our commitments. Which commitments? All kinds, including ecological, social, familial, moral, and spiritual. Another core theme is very much related to this: avoiding the major sins. Both responsibility and righteousness are required to construct a new society where members can live in peace, prosperity, and safety. This new order places special emphasis on our eating habits, family life, charity, repentance, law, relationships with members of other religious groups, and even the manner in which we greet each other. Surat Al-Baqara tells us that we have a responsibility on this earth. After this Surat Al-‘Imran urges sabr (perseverance). An-Nisa then tells us that in order to perseverance also demands being fair and kind to the weak. Surat Al-Ma’idah continues to exhort us to be responsible, while adding to this the imperative to be righteous and obedient and to strive for a just society where all can live in peace. Today let’s contemplate this vision of a just and obedient community, carefully study the requirements for creating it, and make a list of what we can do personally in our lives to make it come about. Ameen.
