August 7, 2013 Exodus 24:1-3 1 Now He said to Moses, “Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar. 2 And Moses alone shall come near the Lord, but they shall not come near; nor shall the people go up with him.” 3 So Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words which the Lord has said we will do.” Wednesdays with Moses Don’t get too close. That’s the message God gives to the people, inviting only Moses to climb up the mountain. We know from other passages that the people were only too happy to comply. They were afraid of God’s presence and much happier when He appeared only to their leader. We understand their trepidation and the reason God kept them at a distance. Their sin could not come near His holiness. They were unworthy of such a moment and would be consumed in His greatness if they dared to draw near. That’s why the salvation we’ve been given through Christ is so amazing! We are no more worthy than they were, but we’ve been given Christ’s righteousness, which allows us access into the very throne room of God. The gap between God and us has not been lessened—He has not changed and our righteousness is still fully insufficient. But the gap has been bridged for us, and we can now come to God as His children. That’s the incredible reality of our hope and the source of the joy of our salvation. – Dr. Mike Clarensau serves as Senior Director of the Healthy Church Network
