August is barely over, and yet as far as global issues are concerned, this month is turning out to be utterly dreadful. While watching world news, I cannot remember at what point exactly was my brain completely numbed by the roll-call of sad or worrying events. All I know is that I was suddenly jolted awake by a news tidbit which, compared to the others, somehow seemed almost-irrelevant: August 12 was World Elephant Day. Roan and I are keen fans of elephants, firstly because we truly believe that they are magnificent and soulful animals. We also appreciate their symbolism. Since ancient times and across many cultures, the Elephant has been a symbol of loyalty, protection, commitment to family, intelligence, and good luck. For professionals like us, the Elephant is good because it is a sign of good health, hard work, and hence, wealth and prosperity. Elephants are relevant to world issues today because they symbolise Compassion and Wisdom--qualities which are definitely needed by a lot of people today. Most of all, the Elephant is a powerful symbol of Hope, a spiritual commodity which might be seriously needed in the streets of Gaza, the mountains of Iraq, the deserts of Syria, the battlefields of east Ukraine, and the hospitals of West Africa. Hope is also needed by these mighty yet endangered animals themselves! We humans admire elephants because these animals display very human-like qualities. And yet, recent events prove that there are plenty of humans who are much worse than the lowest animals.
