Augusta Commissioner Grady Smith still open to candidates for District 7 seat “Let’s be fair to everybody, and let’s see who all puts his name in the hat,” said Grady Smith, who represents Super District 10. He said he will place making the appointment on next week’s meeting agenda. Donnie Smith, a former state trooper, resigned from the commission Monday, days after a Georgia State Patrol report accused him of accepting a state salary while working for a hospitality company Masters Week. Shortly after he stepped down, the names of several interested candidates surfaced. They included Donnie Smith’s 2012 opponent, former Richmond County Board of Education member Kenny Echols; Grady Smith’s former opponent and Mayor Deke Copenhaver favorite Sean Frantom; and retired businessman Sonny Pittman, who heads the West Augusta Alliance neighborhood group. They aren’t the only ones interested in the post, said Grady Smith. As of Wednesday, Smith said he’d learned Hap Harris, who serves on the Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority, and others are interested in the seat. No women or minority candidates have made their interest in the post known to him, Smith said.
