Austins new city council District 5 includes residents who live in the southern heart of the city along South Lamar, and extends south, almost to the Hays County line. The Zilker neighborhood and others near it are well-organized and politically active, while residents of areas farther south rarely spend time at City Hall and dont vote as often.
