Australia to Manage PNG University Source: The National, Monday 13th of October, 2014 THE Western Pacific University in Southern Highlands will be different from universities in the country because it will be managed by an Australian university, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says. He told the opening of a K1million Information Technology complex at the Ialibu Secondary School in his Ialibu-Pangia electorate on Friday, that the university would be managed by an internationally-recognised university from Australia. The chairman of the university will be Fr Jan Czuba, president of the Divine Word University, in Madang, and it would be managed by the Royal Institute of Technology in Melbourne through a 10-year management contract. It will offer technology programmes with qualifications internationally certified and similar to those offered in Australia, the US and United Kingdom. He said the management contract would be reviewed every 10 years. O’Neill said the construction would start in 2015 and the first intake was expected by 2017 depending on the completion of the facilities. The university was expected to have an intake of about 6000 students. “This is one of the biggest projects in the country and I call on the people to embrace the change and take care of the people that will come and live with us,” he said. He said Ialibu Secondary School would be a feeder school to the university.
