Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology Victoria Regional Office TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING - MELBOURNE AREA for DAMAGING WIND and HEAVY RAINFALL For people in parts of the Port Phillip, Inner East, Inner, Northern and Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula Local Warning Areas. Issued at 6:40 pm Wednesday, 7 January 2015. The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 6:40 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Craigieburn, the area west of Geelong City and the area east of Rokewood. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to southeast. They are forecast to affect Broadmeadows, Coburg and Geelong City by 7:10 pm and Greensborough, Preston and Torquay by 7:40 pm. Damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely. Wind gusts reaching 98 km/h at St Kilda at 15:11. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Keep clear of fallen power lines. * secure any loose objects in the vicinity of your home. * keep away from creeks and drains. * do not drive vehicles through flooded areas. * stay indoors if possible. * Avoid using the phone during the storm. * if you are outside, avoid sheltering under trees * listen to the radio for storm updates * switch off your computer and electrical appliances The next warning is due to be issued by 7:40 pm. A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Central, South West, Northern Country, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland, Wimmera and parts of the East Gippsland and Mallee districts. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureaus website at bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 217. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
