Authors are often asked who their favorite writers are. I always include Alice Munro at the top of my list. She writes with a kind of truth and grace and precision, and creates, for me, at least, indelible images. Heres one such example, taken from her book THE VIEW FROM CASTLE ROCK. Shes talking about cherry blossoms: I wanted to look at them when they flowered. And not just to look at them--as you could do from the street--but to get underneath those branches, to lie down on my back with my head against the trunk of the tree and to see how it rose, as if out of my own skull, rose up and lost itself in an upside-down sea of blossom. You can read a lot of books about how to write well, or you can read sentences like this, which so economically tell you about form and structure and artfulness, and about what makes for a feeling of rich satisfaction in a reader.
