Autism Ontario’s response to comments made regarding an Etobicoke Group Home May 20, 2014 (Toronto, ON) Autism Ontario was both surprised and disturbed to learn about the remarks made regarding a group home in Etobicoke, Ontario over the weekend. Despite a wide range of information and research available to the general public, parents, professionals, and our political leaders that supports people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) living successfully and well-supported in their communities, going to school with their friends and peers, having relationships with their neighbours, and engaging in local community programs; some misinformed comments were made, seemingly more for political gain than for strengthening vibrant neighbourhoods. Isolating people with ASD can lead to depression and sadness. Remaining close to loved ones when placed into the care of others is vital to a person’s mental health. We all need emotional connections to thrive and survive. This includes a connection to our community. A parent trusts someone to care for their most treasured and precious loved one after much soul-searching and research. The decision to let others look after the well-being and care of one’s child is not an easy choice. Knowing that a residential program will meet your child’s basic needs, and keep them safe is paramount. Knowing that residential staff members are trained to develop plans to help your child learn and grow is important. Knowing that your child is understood, supported and welcomed in their community is everything.
