Autism, genes and the immune system. Scientist now know that genetic differences affect the way that key components in the immune system function. Children have different genes that can determine how their immune system develop (speed, strength and other factors). These factors determine the likelihood of developing the immune disorders that lead to autism. At the end of the day, it is not the genes that cause autism, it is the immune system (more specifically microglial activation). urmc.rochester.edu/Encyclopedia/Content.aspx?ContentTypeID=134&ContentID=122
