Autos older than 16 yrs not banned in city There’s a good news for the auto-rickshaw drivers owning rickshaws older than 16 years. The state government has decided that the ban on such rickshaws will be implemented only in Mumbai.Earlier, the state government had issued a notification making it mandatory to scrap rickshaws older than 16 years across the state. However, the decision has been revoked in a meeting held at the commissioner of state transport office in Mumbai. Conveyor of the Rickshaw Panchayat Nitin Pawar said, “There are about 55,000 auto-rickshaws in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) area out of which more than 20 per cent are over 16 years old.” Pawar added, “We have also sent a request about the welfare of the auto-rickshaw drivers which will be decided upon soon. Moreover, we have asked the administration to sanction 10 schoolchildren per auto-rickshaw, as the Regional Transport Office permits only five school students presently.” The Rickshaw Panchayat will soon go on hunger strike to press their demands for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) outlets in the city. However, the auto-rickshaws will not go off road and will be plying normally.
