Avoid the Wrath So the messenger answered and said, Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead; and the ark of God has been captured. Then it happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell off the seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years. 1 Samuel 4:17-18 Gods judgment against the house of Eli came to pass. As Eli was sitting at the gates, the messenger brought the news of the battle to the children of Israel. First, he told of their defeat and the great loss of life, and Eli was not moved. Next, he broke the news of the death of Hophni and Phinehas. Again, Eli does not seem surprised by this news. Now, check this out. He told how the Ark of the Covenant was captured by the Philistines, and Eli has a heart attack. He fell backwards, breaking his neck, and died. He was the priest. He was supposed to represent God to the people, but he allowed his sons to compromise and sin against God, leading the people into sin. He accepted the judgment of God and the loss of his sons, because he knew it was his own fault, but the loss of the Ark was too great a burden to carry. Many times, we sin against God and the burden of our punishment is too great to bear. If we had only thought about the consequences ahead of time, we would not have sinned against God. Heed the warnings of God and you will avoid the consequences. God warns us, because He loves us. The wrath of God does not end with death. -C. H. Spurgeon-
