Avoid waking up with a stiff neck. What causes a stiff neck? Sleeping wrong, simple as that. Overtired, sound sleepers, or too many glasses of wine in some cases, will cause you to knock right out and stay in one sleeping position for a prolonged amount of time. This causes awkward positions that tighten muscles, compress nerves, & cause considerable neck pain. Though sleep positions sometimes cant be controlled, start out sleeping in a position that puts least amount of stress on the neck. In most cases, back is most desirable as it allows head, neck, & spine to maintain neutral position. For extra comfort, add a pillow under your knees. Second runner up, side sleeping, however, beware of that space above your shoulder, it needs to be filled so that your head and neck are supported in neutral position. Hug a body pillow (or in my case, my 65 pound dog, as pictured) will be helpful in keeping spine safe. Stomach sleepers, uh-oh, danger, this leaves you with the neck turned to one side side for extended period of time, making neck very vulnerable to neck pain & injury. Talk to your physical therapist about finding the right pillow and proper sleep position for you. Megan, EHS Westport elitehealthservices/blog/?p=569
