Avram Piha asked me to share this Ari Shavit quote, about how Israel saved [Jews from Arab countries from a life of misery and backwardness. The first image is from his book, the other from an article I wrote. Shavit, who is much beloved among liberal Jews in the West and among Israelis is a Eurocentric chauvinist of the style most liberal progressive Jews would normally eschew as being a product of the 1950s, but he gets away with his off-color statements about the backwardness of Arabs (he is the one who claimed Jerusalem is lost because there are too many Arabs in Jerusalem schools), because the Israeli left has never been held to the same standards of tolerance as other groups in the West. Thats why...and Im ashamed to say it...you will find too many academics in Israel who openly refer to Ethiopian Jews as kushi...you will find supposedly left wing activists who work with Bedouin in the Negev who call black Bedouin haBeduim Hakushim...because there is no sense it is wrong.
