Awake or asleep. At first thought I would say that we all know the difference, and we also think we know which one we are at any given time. But you can be awake with your eyes closed (”I’m just resting my eyes”) and you can be asleep with your eyes open (so tired you’re not even really there). And normally you are much more aware when awake than when asleep as well. It’s the same with our spiritual lives as well. We can be asleep or awake, oblivious or aware. We can easily sleep walk through life, not seeing the hand of God on our lives. Or our eyes can be opened wide, taking in the splendor of Creation , such as the beautiful fall colors or the wonder of say a hummingbird. With eyes closed, there is darkness; with them opened as when awake, there is light. Ephesians 5:14 says “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” If we are truly awake in our faith life we are open to that Light shining on the path laid out for us. And we have joy... 7My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music. 8Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. 9I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. 10For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. 11Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. Psalm 57:7-11
