Awami League has to be more responsible : 10th National Election Mohammad Shihab Uddin The nation observed 5th january’s controversial 10th national parliamentary election ever held under an elected government of Bangladesh. The ruling Awami-league, however, termed Sunday’s election is ‘victory of the people and democracy.’ But, BNP-led opposition alliance rejected the ‘unilateral,’ `farcical’ national election and demanded the government to immediately resign and announce a fresh schedule of the parliamentary elections under a neutral non-party government. Because of 153 seats of the 300-member national parliament have been captured before election by candidates of the ruling coalition without a single vote cast, deprived 52 per cent of voters of their right to franchise. On the other hand, polling in the rest 147 constituencies for the Jatiya Sangsad was marked by death of 25 people in violence, low turnout of voters, `while even the most generous independent estimates put the turnout at 10-12 per cent,’ and stuffing of ballot boxes by ruling party activist across the country. Meanwhile, at least 25 candidates, mostly individual ones, reportedly withdrew from the race in the 10th parliamentary election on Sunday accusing physical attacks and forcible ouster of their polling agents from the poll booths and massive vote rigging by the ruling party activists in different districts including Dhaka in the country. By the multilateral corruption this election became more controversial and lousy. On the other hand ex-president Arshad led Jatiya party is performing dramatic role. They play their activities on Government (a post position, special ambassador of prime minister and ministries) and opposition, which is the uncommon phenomena and ignorance of democratic system of the world. History mentions that, Awami league has a glorious achievement on liberation war and politics of Bangladesh, it is a most prominent and leading political party of this country and it was reverenced on democratic system from the birth. Parties agenda, election manifesto, procession, seminar and in everywhere their basic demand was democratic system. For this reason, Awami league got mass support on liberation war. But, now a day, Awami league totally destroyed the apprehension of election and democratic system arranging a so-called election, ‘unilateral’, `incredible’ by a subjugated election commission on 5th January 2014. After all, it has become a burning question of survival for democratic political system, political stability and economic growth. So, ruling party should perceive assent of mass people and countries situation, take immediately pragmatic step for return right to franchise of people by settling a credible, free and fair election.
