Award winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park is celebrating its 5th birthday with an action-packed week of events over May Half-Term. Visitors will be able to share the party spirit with special prizes, workshops, Ranger talks, close-ups with exotic species and even the chance to join the lions for a special breakfast. The week long celebration marks the park’s amazing growth in just five years into the UK’s fastest growing walk through attraction and a major force in the protection of endangered species from around the world. To celebrate, the 80-acre park will run a different theme every day as it marks the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (BIAZA)s ‘ ‘Love Your Wildlife Park Week’ and collects funds for its own charity the Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation. There is also the chance to have photos taken with life-size meerkat mascot Chomp as well as photographic competitions with great prizes. “I am so proud to be a part of Yorkshire Wildlife Park, year after year we have continued to grow and have the great privilege of looking after some of the most beautiful animals in the world,” said Director and Founder Cheryl Williams. “There will be so much to see and do during Half Term week as we celebrate our birthday and help visitors enjoy our unique collection of animals.” The park, in Branton just outside Doncaster, offers an unrivalled opportunity to come face to face with Amur Leopards, Painted Hunting Dogs, Lions, Giraffes, Meerkats, Wallabies, Camels, Giant Anteaters, Zebra and many many more. Activities are all week and include: Monday 26th May - Yorkshire Wildlife Parks 5th anniversary celebrations! The party gets started with craft and animal enrichment sessions in the Wildlife Discovery Zone and the chance to win some brilliant prizes. Some of the animals will be getting birthday cakes specially made for them by their keepers too! Tuesday 27th May - Native species day There is a mini-beast safari to see whose living in the ancient spring woodland. There will be a chance to view some of the mini-beasts found under the microscope later in the day. Then gather on the Land of the Tiger walkway with the RSPB to see who’s living in the wetlands next door to the Tigers. Wednesday 28th May - Carnivore day Get to the park early today and have the chance to see our lions – ‘the pride of Yorkshire’ - enjoy their breakfast and then later the biggest cat species, our endangered Amur tigers, have their lunch Thursday 29th May - Hoof stock Enjoy the chance to take part in craft and enrichment sessions and the opportunity to see the Giraffes enjoy their special lunchtime treats later in the day. There will be also a special African plains talk to learn more about the animals in our African plains enclosure, as well as a Camel talk to learn more about our Bactrian Camels. Friday 30th May - Primates Things may get a little bit messy as the primates come to the party but there will also be sessions to learn more about why Environmental Enrichment is important to our primates. During the day, there will be a chance to observe the Baboons using their interactive equipment inside the Monkey Play House and visitors maybe even be able to get involved too. YWP, which has just opened the vast Shopping Village, has enjoyed record growth since opening in 2009 when it welcomed 66,000 visitors.This year over 500,000 visitors are expected. The park has also delivered a significant boost to tourism for Yorkshire spending £2m this year alone on developments.
