Aşık Mahzuni Şerif (1940 — 2002) was another great ashik (Anatolian Alevi troubadour, ministrel) from Turkey. Born in Maras, Eastern Anatolia, he became one of Turkeys best-know composers and interpreters of folk music, and brought strong intellectual and social elements into music and folk poetry, singing about freedom, love, migration, but also about Turkish military oppression, American war crimes since the 70’s etc. leaving behind more than 450 albums, 50 casettes and 9 books! Probably there is no single good Turkish singer who hasn’t sang one of Mahzuni’s songs or poems. Here is one Mahzuni classic sang by yet another phenomena of Turkish Folk, Protest and Funk music Selda Bagcan, the political singer, activist, artist whose funky and 70’s psychedelic Turkish electronic sound became famous (again) these days in some electronic music scenes in Engeland and Scandinavia. https://youtube/watch?v=RWaRIUf25gw
