B.Couleur Culture: Marvelous Sugar Baby, the Domino Sphinx by Artist Kara Walker Walker, one of the most important African American artists of our era. Sited in the sprawling industrial relics of Brooklyn’s legendary Domino Sugar Factory, Walker’s physically and conceptually expansive work of Marvelous Sugar Baby. The idea for the 75 foot Negress-as-sphinx stemmed from reading abou a monument that lawmakers proposed in 1923 to honor the nations mammies. The sphinx is something like Ms. Walkers realization of that dream, bust as a racists nightmare: The figure may be wearing a mammies kerchief, but shell never be beaten into submission. The Negress-as-sphinx is that unbeatable underdog. The exhibition opens on May 10th through July 6th 2014 and promises to be an eye-opening experience for both those who are familiar with Walker’s work and those who are new to it.
