B.G. Verghese is gone: Last winter I sat with him in his lovely home. He adjusted the heater for me, got nostalgic for journalism as it was and lamented the increasing conformism of corporate-driven media. As I left, he asked me to visit him again as it was nice to have a former colleague drop by. He showed me his columns published across multiple newspapers. He wrote one every week if not more often. I could have never guessed he was 85. He was one of my best editors, one I respected and admired -- as much for his elegant prose as for his scrupulous adherence to what I was taught to believe were the core values of journalism. Will miss you, Mr.Verghese. There are not many like you left.
