B> Padma erosion devours BGB Border Outpost in Rajshahi RAJSHAHI : The unabated and continuous erosion in the Padma river has devoured Char Khidirpur Border Outpost (BOP) belongs to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in the district Tuesday night, reports BSS. Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) had dumped more than 9,000 sand bags to protect the BOP through preventing the erosion but all the efforts have gone into vain. Apart from this, the erosion has made more than 300 dwellers homeless and now they are passing their days under open sky. The erosion has also devoured mosque, madrsaha and community clinic along with huge trees and standing crops. Villagers say if the situation prolongs there will be no land in Char Khidirpur. Local officials of BWDB say the river erosion has washed away Char Khidirpur BOP. Preventive measures done at a cost of around Taka 50 lakh didn’t yield any result. After loosing their camp the BGB members have taken shelter at Char Khidirpur Govt. Primary School at present. Harunur Rashid, Executive Engineer of BWDB, said: “We had adopted a Tk 63-lakh project to protect the 105-meter BOP area. We dumped 9,100 of 13,000 sand loaded geo bags. Without finding any hope we abandoned the project work”. “Now, we are putting in our level best effort to protect the nearby Char Khanpur BOP, which is also facing the similar erosion threat,” he added. Engineer Harun added that more than 35,000 geo bags were dumped by spending Taka 1.68 crore to protect the 280-meter Khanpur BOP area since July 25 last.
