A business report on “S-Mart: A world class shopping complex in Savar” Kanak Chapa, Business Reporter, The Daily Star, Dhaka, 03 September 2013 Sikder Group has recently opened a big shopping mall named after “S-Mart” in Savar. Opened to the public on 6 August 2013, the mart is located at Nabinagr, near National Mausoleum (Jatiyo Smriti Shoudha), Savar, Dhaka which is a 15-storied multi-functional complex. The mart has space for 1500 retail stores and cafeterias, and also possesses a large underground gymnasium, a multiplex movie theater, a top floor food court and an indoor theme park. The fully air-conditioned shopping mart with rooftop gardens is considered a modern symbol of the emerging city of Savar. As of now, S-Mart is the largest shopping malls in Savar and 2nd largest in Bangladesh where about 10,000 people visit daily for shopping and entertainment. Constructed at the cost of more than 50 million BDT, S-mart is called a one stop shopping mall as everything is found under the one roof where customers and visitors security is maintained strictly through appropriate state-of-the art mechanism. As a result of establishment of S-mart there are both positive and negative impacts on the people of the locality. First of all, it has had huge collections of internationally reputed branded items sold at reasonable prices and its one stop services allure customers to their outlet. Also it has created commendable opportunity for all classes of customers to try to alternatives the next door for a huge number of shops are here. Moreover, most importantly, it has created considerable job opportunities to a huge number of local young people thereby helping a lot towards reducing unemployment problem and changing economic conditions of local people. Furthermore, it has created opportunity for the locally produced commodities as they can be compared with the internationally reputed bands sold in the market, for being cost & quality competitive. Besides these, it celebrates traditional festivals to keep the new generation aware of their attachment to the rich cultural heritage of the locality. On the other hand, S-mart has created a few small-scale difficulties as well which may include traffic congestion, sound pollution and deprivation of small scale businesses of the locality. Huge traffic congestion and disturbing sound of traffic have become common phenomena for the local people. Also, the mart has created a tough competition for the locally produced commodities due to the fact that it sells internationally reputed branded items at very competitive prices thereby creating a threat for their extinction. In addition, after the establishment of the mart daily sales of locally produced commodities have drastically fallen due to glittery of foreign products resulting in the alarming treat for hundreds of local shop owners to be drive off the competition, and thousands of staffs and their dependents are now facing a threat to their livelihood. Above all, in fact, S-mart is a unique opportunity not only for the locality and its people but also for the whole country and her citizens due to the fact that it is a modern establishment worthy in all terms. ========= Translation: Now 53.70 percent people of the country are literate. Of these, the highest 61.9 percent literate people belong to Barisal division, and the lowest rate of literacy falls in Sylhet division where literacy rate is 45.20 percent. Within a distance of only three years, 5 percent effective literacy rate has increased. Comparatively, literacy rate is higher amongst younger generation. These data were disclosed in the outcome of the survey titled Literacy Assessment Survey 2011, announced in the conference room of Bangladesh Statistical Bureau (BSS). Planning Minister Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) A. K. Khondhaker was present in the report publication ceremony as the chief guest. Literacy rate of the people aged between 11-45 was ascertained in the survey. Mohd. Abdul Kadir Miah, Director of BBS, presented the data of the survey. He informed that, as per the data found in the Literacy Assessment Survey 2011, effective literacy rate of Bangladesh has increased to 53.70 percent. In 2008 literacy rate was 48.8 percent. Over the last three years, the literacy rate has increased to 4.90 percent. According to the data of the report, 54.30 percent people in Chittagong division, 51.50 percent people in Dhaka division, 56.20 percent people in Khulna division, and 53.10 percent people in Rajshahi division are literate.
