B1452 DAILY MOTIVATIONALS TUESDAY 040314 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” (1) Numbers 20.12 Yesterday we showed how the children of Israel were deeply angry with Moses and Aaron because they could not find water. After petitioning God, He instructed on how they would get water. See the specific instruction in verse 8: “Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals.” But what did Moses do? Rather than speak to the rock, he “lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod”. Although water still came out because God was committed to providing for His people, He nonetheless was very angry with Moses for being disobedient. The instruction was to “speak to the rock”, and not to strike it. So why did Moses disobey God? Because he was very angry with the children of Israel. In fact even before he struck the rock, he had cussed and described them as “rebels”. What are the lessons for us? One, we must manage our anger in such a way that we would not sin against God. While Ephesians 4.26 says you may “be angry”, but it also admonishes you “not to sin”. Moses had a reputation for being unable to manage and control his anger. Even while he lived like an Egyptian prince, see the way he killed the Egyptian who was maltreating the Jew. See also the way he reacted when he returned with the Ten Commandments and found the children of Israel worshipping a graven image. Two, we must obey God in His instructions to us. The instruction was to speak to the rock, not to strike it. By beating the rock, Moses also did not reverence God before the people. It was also an act of unbelief. God still speak specify instructions to us today, especially through the Bible. they are meant to be completely obeyed. Tomorrow by God’s grace, we will finalise the mini series. God bless your day.
