BAHR-UL-ULOOM (OCEAN OF KNOWLEDGE) HAZRAT MOHAMMAD ABDUL QADEER SIDDIQUI “HASRAT “ (Pen Name) (rh) (1871-1962) Siddiqui was always referred to by his peers and followers as Bahr Ul Uloom (ocean of knowledge), famous among his close spiritual disciples(murideen) as Qadeer Piya or Qadeer the Beloved, He was the direct descendant of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiqu (rz). In twenty eighth generation, his genealogical lineage meets with Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (rz)from fathers side; and in thirty second generation with Hazrat Imam Hussain (as)from the mothers side. This way he was Siddiqui as well as Hussaini. Hazrat Siddiqui (rh) was born on October 12, 1871, (Rajab 27, 1288 H) in Hyderabad. His father , Hazrat Mohammed Abdul Qadir Siddiqui (rh) was a learned Shaikh who has also written many books on Islamic Fiqh and Hadith. At the age of 8, Hazrat Abdul Qadeer Siddiqui (rh) did Hajj along with his parents and maternal uncle Hazrat Khawja Mohammad Siddiq Hussaini also know as Khaja Mahboob Allah (rh) who later became his Shaikh. In 1887 he received Khilafah from his Shaikh Khaja Mohammad Siddiq Mahbooballah (rh) at the age of 16 years. Hazrat Mohammad Abdul Qadeer Siddiquis (rh) mother died in the year 1887 and father died in 1911. He completed the degrees of Maulvi Fazil in Arabic and Munshi Fazil in Persian from Punjab University and received gold medals for securing top rank. He taught briefly at Darul-Uloom College, Hyderabad which was first affiliated to Punjab University and later expanded into an independent University, named Osmania University. After the establishment of Osmania University, Hazrat Abdul Qadeer Siddiqui (rh) became Professor and was the first Head of the Department of Theology. In this capacity he served Osmania University for over 20 years and later retired in 1932. In 1924 he went for Hajj for the second time. During this travel he visited Syria, Iraq, Palestine and Western Saudi Arabia (Hijaz). In 1932 he did Hajj for the third time. After his retirement in 1932, he continued teaching, Quran, Hadith, Fiqh and Islaimc theology to thousands of people who used to come to his residence located at Malakpet area in Hyderabad city. Mohammed Abdul Qadeer Siddique (rh) was indeed the living phenomenon of a Perfect Human Being (Insan-e-Kamil) and a person of obligatory proximity (Qurb-e-Fraraez) with Allah (swt). He had distinction in Prophet’s (PBUH) subordination and was enthroned with the legacy of unveiling (Kashf). The people who were close to Hazrat Siddiqui (rh) testified that he was at the helm of the spiritual hierarchy during his life time. On March 24, 1962 (17 Shawwal, 1381 H), Hazrat Siddiqui (rh) passed away at the age of 91 years. His funeral procession was attended by thousands of his murideen(deciples) and well wishers. He was buried at Siddique Gulshan in Bahadurpura area in Hyderabad. A massive tomb is under construction over his Dargah(shrine) and is expected to be as high as 117 feet. His Urs is celebrated between 16-18 Shawwal each year. Hazrat Siddiqui (rh) has written more than fifty books in Urdu, Persian and Arabic apart from Siddiquis Exegesis(Tafseer-e-Siddiqui) (Translation and commentary) of Quran in Urdu. • Al-Tawhid, in Persian and translated in Urdu by his eldest son Muhammad Abdul Rahim Siddiqi “Hairat” • Hikmat-e- Islamiyyah • Masl-e-adam Nasq-e-Quran • Al-Irfan • Saama • Islami Hukumat • Tafhimat-e Siddiqi • Sud ka Masalah • Haqiqat-e Bayat • Haiqat-e-Meraj • Usool-e-Islam • Nizamul Amal-e-Fuqara Siddiqi wrote a book Mayaar ul Kalam in Arabic on the science of Kalam (Dialectical Theology) and complied an Arabic Dictionary. That made him known in the Arab world. When he felt that Ibn Arabis Fusus-al-Hikam was misunderstood by both the followers and critics of the Shaikh due to his unique style, Siddiqui decided to have an interpretive translation into Urdu. The translation received critical acclaim, and was included in the curriculum of many schools most notably the University of Punjab, Lahore. The critics of Hanafi School of Fiqh regarded it as a Fiqh of a persons personal opinion.Professor Siddiqui compiled the Hadiths explicating the jurisprudential details of the Hanafi School of Law, arguing that the Hanafi School is totally based on the Quran and the Hadith. This work is titled Ad-Din which was written originally in Arabic and then translated into Urdu.It consists of four sections. • 1. Kitab al-Ilm - Book of Knowledge. • 2. Kitab al-Iman - Book of Faith • 3. Kitab al-Ihsan - Book of Virtues • 4. Kitab al-Islam - Book of Islam This was included in the syllabus of Osmania University. The detailed biography of Hazrat Siddiqui Abdullah (a 600 pages book compiled by his grandson, Muhammad Anwaruddin siddique), Toor Tajalli( compiled by Mohammed Jaffar Hussain Qadri) and Yaad-e-Hasrat Ayaat (compiled by his son Dr. Moosa Abdurrehman Siddiqui). He had thousands of students as a professor of theology in Osmania University. Some notable ones were: • Shaykh-ul-Islam Muhammad Badshah Husaini of Qadri Chaman - Appointed to address in the grand Makkah Masjid after the Jumuah prayers • Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah - Internationally acclaimed Islamic scholar of France • Abdul Hafiz Qatil, Ilyas Burney, former Head of Department of Economics at Osmania University • Dr. Syedd Abdul Latif - Famous English critic • Abul Fazl Syed Mahmood Quadri, Former Sessions Judge. Hazrat Siddiqui (rh) was a famous poet in Urdu, Persian and Arabic. Compilation of his Urdu Poetry is titled Kulliyat-e-Hasrat. He trained a number of students in Sufi poetry, most notable being his grandson Waqar Siddiqui whose Qawwalies were sung by famous Qawwals such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He also trained many Qawwals in the spiritual aspects of Qawwali. That included internationally famous Qawwals like Raziuddin, Bahauddin, Manzoor among others, whose children are now performing at international levels such as Coke Studio of Pakistan.
