BANDS WHO SLIPPED THROUGH THE CRACKS : Music is a funny world sometimes - Sometimes a band comes along, who are in the wrong time, wrong place; or maybe right time but for whatever reason it doesnt quite work for them, whilst a totally average band inexplicably gets all the plaudits. I thought Id just share a few of my favourites - of the ones that got away; the artists who in a parallel world are feted as geniuses. Think of them as the George Lazenbys of music if you will. Sometimes they brought out a great couple of albums (as in the case of the #1 in this list) or sometimes they might be just like a mayfly - having their one tiny moment of brilliance before disappearing, never to be heard of again. # 1: THE SOUND Im reckoning a fair few of you will be at least aware of the name, but for those who arent, The Sound were an English band who were around at same time as label mates Echo & Bunnymen & Joy Division, but somehow just slipped through the net despite the fact that their first two albums (Jeopardy 1980 / From The Lions Mouth 1981) were top drawer - matching their peers. Maybe it was because lead singer Adrian Borland wasnt a pin-up - he didnt have the haircut of McCulloch, or the gaunt physique of Ian Curtis (although his eventual suicide in 1999 after years of clinical depression suggests he was driven by the same demons), but it never quite happened for them. There are no videos of their tracks - but this song from their debut album is just superb, with the intensity of Joy Division and the spikeyness of Gang of Four or early Bunnymen - the guitar solo piercing through two thirds of the way through is just superb. Adrian Borland & The Sound went onto record several other albums, but success just kept slipping away, and they never quite captured the intensity of the first two albums, though subsequent releases still showed flashes of brilliance. https://youtube/watch?v=M0FKEDexivA
