BANGLADESH - For three days in a row hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshi garment workers have taken to the streets to demand a minimum wage of $100/month. Workers have blocked entrance to, and even set alight a number of factories where garments for big Western retailers are produced (think Walmart, H&M, Primark etc.). Bangladeshi workers often work in the most dire conditions for more than 80 hours/week. Last April a poorly constructed factory collapsed, killing over 1100 workers. The protests are met with severe violence from the police, and factory owners have rejected demands for higher wages, claiming they are unable to raise salaries due to poor global economic conditions.
