BANNED ITEMS - TopicsExpress

BANNED ITEMS The Indian eats dhal and rice and roti The black man cook-up bread and bake Each of these is from peas and flour made But when these items for prudence sake Were struck from the import trade The politicians unleashed a tirade Declaring in acrimonious fashion This is racist, an attack on the Indian. It did not matter that the black man Was without potatoes for his stews Split peas for his cook-up or duff for his metagee Once the Indians couldn’t access them readily It became “victimization, an attack on the Indian” Cooking oil was in short supply And it caused a mighty hue and cry Some people caught up in the turmoil Even forgot their penchant for coconut oil. It was no cause for alarm or fervor If blackie could no longer float his bakes Who the hell cares about the black bundar? But once Shanta couldn’t fry her boulanger Clap her roti or simmer her pholouri It was an outrage, “an attack on the coolie.” I have a feeling that should racism be banned It would invoke the ire of some politicians They’d take to the streets and loudly declare There they go again, they want to see us suffer They have taken away our culture.
