BAPTIST FASTING AND PRAYER NETWORK 2014 DAY 8: March 24 THE MOUNT EBAL EXPERIENCE: CELEBRATION AND CONSECRATION OF LANDMARKS (GRACE FOR COMPILATION OF HISTORY, CRAFTING OF TOKENS, CONSTITUTION OF STRUCTURES) “... ‘Let us get ready and build an altar--but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.’ On the contrary, it is to be a witness between us and you and the generations that follow... Then in the future your descendants will not be able to say to ours, ‘You have no share in the Lord.’ Joshua 22:26-27 (NIV) Positive Case Study: Covenant Renewed at Mount Ebal (Joshua 8:30-35) The two and half tribes of Israel (Joshua 22:21-27) Negative Case Study: Gideon’s Ephod (Judges 8:22-27); Jeroboam’s Altar (1 Kings 12:28-32) Ahaz’s copycat Altar (2 Kings 16:10-16). It is good to build landmarks to commemorate historical events. However, the church must desist from idolatry. There is the need for us to honour great people who have made impact but we must not deceive them. God is the only One who must take the central place in our celebration. Commemorative tokens and structures enable coming generations to know our history as the two and half tribes of Israel did when Joshua led Israel to Mount Ebal (Joshua 22:26-27; 8:30-35). However, we must not idolize ourselves as Gideon did (Judges 8:22-27) neither must we copy unbelievers to gain personal glory. Ahaz went into such an error when he copied the Assyrian altar, which he saw in Damascus. Let us pray that God will grant us grace and resources to build commemorative structures and tokens that will glorify His name only. PRAYER POINTS 1. Father, thank you for giving us reasons to celebrate. 2. Lord, be with all the committees that are in charge of designing the centenary commemorative tokens and items. 3. Lord, supply the resources to finance the items. 4. Deliver us from the spirit of error. 5. Deliver us from the copycat spirit of Ahaz, the inferiority complex of Jeroboam and the hypocritical self-seeking greed of Gideon. 6. Help us to leave a lasting legacy to the next generation. 7. PRAYER FOR THE PRESIDENT AND THE NBC LEADERSHIP TEAM: Pray for renewal among our theological studies leaders and that they will be used to turn our theological institutions into centres of spiritual and academic excellence, 8. PRAYER FOR THE CONVENTION-IN-SESSION 2014: Pray that the Convention-in-Session will bless the people in Ibadan, our host community. Pray for genuine visitation of God on their lives and that they will be truly born again, filled with the Holy Ghost and ready to serve the Lord TODAY’S PROMISE: RENEWAL OF LIFE: “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” Romans 6:4 (NIV)
