BAPTIZE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT November 21, 2013 at 1:57pm Matthew 3:11 He will. “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Matthew 3: 16-17 Jesus was baptized. “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like above and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Luke 4:1-13 Jesus started his ministry after he was anointed with the Holy Spirit. “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.3 the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given tome, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’9 the devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.” Luke 4:18-19 Jesus would not and could not do any miracles until the Holy Spirit had come to him. The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Acts 2:1-2;4 All were filled. “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting….. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 4:1-14 by what power. A very good story. What a difference the baptism in the Holy Spirit makes! *Jesus commanded his disciples not to do anything until they had been baptized with the Holy Spirit. “The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day.4 but many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.5 the next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John,Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is”‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’[a]12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.” 2 Corinthians 3:6 so much of the deadness in the church today stems from believers attempting to minister without the Holy Spirits Empowerment “He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—notof the letter but of the Spirit;for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” · Many Christians claim that the baptism of the Holy Spirit comes automatically at salvation. John 6:44 except the father. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.” · Although’s true they have the Holy Spirit once they are saved, that doesn’t mean they have been baptized in Him. · It’s onet hing to have the Holy Spirit and quite another for the Holy Spirit to have you. John 14: 16-17 Holy Spirit couldn’t be received until after Christ had ascended back to heaven in glory. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” John 7: 37-39 when the Holy Spirit is in you, rivers of life flow out from your innermost being. * The Holy Spirit is a power source. Reject him and you won’t see miracles, healings, demons cast out orspeaking in tongues.* Salvation saves and the baptism in the Holy Spirit empowers! “On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and saidi n a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them 3 9 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” Acts 19:1-2 have you (In Acts 19:2 sounds like many Christians today.) “While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? “They answered, “No,we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Acts 19:6 Holy Spirit came to them. “When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied”. John 14: 16-18 with you forever. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:26 will teach you. “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” 2 Corinthians 1:4 Holy Spirit will comfort you. “who comforts us in all our troubles,so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” John 15: 26-27 Bear witness. “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.” John 16: 7-14 But if I depart. “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he,the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.” Acts 1:8 Baptized in Him. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” RECEIVE HIM Luke 11:13 Holy Spirit is a gift if you’re ready, pray out loud the following prayer from your heart. “Father,I surrender to you completely. I recognize my need for your power to live the Christian life. I am hungry for you! Please baptize me in your Holy Spirit. By faith I receive now the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I take it! It’s mine in Jesus name! Father, thank you for giving me the Holy Spirit! Holy Spirit, thank you for coming. You are welcome in my life. Amen.” Continue to praise and thank the Lord for this wonderful gift. Take a few moments to enjoy his presence and tell him how much you love him. “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Matthew 13:19 Devil talks you out of this gift. “When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path.” Mark 11:24 If you believed in your heart when you prayed, then God’sword promises that you received. God always honors his word. Believe it! As you stepped out in faith to obey the direct command of Jesus. “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it,and it will be yours.” John 20:22 you receive. “But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” “CONGRATULATIONS” You have been filled with God’s supernatural power! As you learn to tap into this power, your life will never be the same. “SPEAKING IN TONGUES” Acts 2: 1-4 disciples spoke. “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 10:44-46 speak with tongues. “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.” Acts 11: 15-18 Peter used this fact to prove to the rest. “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.” Acts 19:6 spoke with tongues. “When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues[a] and prophesied.” Acts 8:5-8 saw the miracles. “Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city.” Acts 8: 14-17 in the Holy Spirit. “When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” Acts 8: 18-24 speaking in tongues. The Holy Spirit will never make you do something against your will. Therefore, you must choose to speak in tongues.“When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said,“Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.” John 14: 26-27 Which is the Holy Ghost. You don’t have to speak in tongues; you get to.Besides, there is really no good reason not to! Speaking in tongues releases God’s power in your life. “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” 1 Corinthians 14: 2;4 when you speak in tongues, you are building yourself up spiritually. “For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a] does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit....... Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.” Jude1:20-21 you also keep yourself in the love of God. “But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.” Isaiah 28: 11-12 produces rest. “Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people, 12 to whom he said, “This is the resting place, let the weary rest”; and, “This is the place of repose”— but they would not listen.” 1 Corinthians 14:14 when you pray in tongues, your natural mind doesn’t understand. Your intellect doesn’t know what your spirit is praying. “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.” 1 Corinthians 2:16 your spirit has the mind of Christ. Your spirit knows all things (1 John 2:20) “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? “But we have the mind of Christ.” Colossians3:10 therefore your spirit always knows how to pray perfectly for situations, yourself and others. “and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” 1 Corinthians12: 27-30 when you pray in tongues do it by yourself, in your home, car around working. Your mind can be occupied with something else. Since your spirit is praying and not your brain, your mind can wander. You can read and listen to music or do bible study while you pray in tongues. “this is cool.” “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[a]? Do all interpret?”
