It falls on the third month of the Islamic calendar known as Rabi al-awwal. In Mecca, the house in which the Prophet was born is decorated and ceremonial prayers are organized. In other parts of the world, this day is celebrated with prayers and recitation of the Prophet’s teachings. Children are taught about the Prophet’s life and his philosophies. In some places carnivals are held where hymns in praise of the Prophet are chanted. 18 January, 2014 (Saturday) -- Milad un Nabi (Shia): There are two major sects in Islam – Shias and Sunnis. According to the Sunni beliefs, the birth date of the Prophet Mohammed falls on the twelfth day of the third month of the Islamic calendar known as Rabi al-awwal. However, according to the observances of the Shias, the birth date of the Prophet is believed to be on the seventeenth day of the third month of the Islamic calendar known as Rabi al-awwal. This day also commemorates the birth date of their sixth Imam Jafar-al-Sadiq. 27 May, 2014 (Tuesday) -- Lailat al Miraj: This is observed on the twenty seventh day of the Islamic month of Rajab that is the seventh month according to the Muslim calendar. It is believed to be a nighttime journey that the Prophet undertook under the guidance of Allah from Mecca to Jerusalem (the Farthest Mosque). He then ascended to Heaven to be purified by Allah who then gave him instructions that Muslims should pray five times a day. 14 June, 2014 (Saturday) -- Laylat al Baraat/ Shab e Barat: In common terms, this observes the Night of Salvation. It is observed on the fourteenth or fifteenth day of the Islamic month of Shaaban which is the eighth month according to the Islamic calendar. On this day, night vigil and special prayers are organized. People repent for the sins they have committed, any act that goes against Shariah, and vow not to commit any sin ever again. It is believed that repentance would make Allah relieve them of all their sins. Sunnis mark this day also to commemorate the birth date of the twelfth Imam Al Mahdi. 28 June, 2014 (Saturday) -- Beginning of Ramadan: This is one of the five pillars of Islamic observances. It happens during the Islamic month of Ramazan, which is ninth month of the Muslim Calendar. It marks the beginning of a month long fast (known as Roza) in which devotees are not supposed to have any food or drink from sunrise to sunset. This is believed to allow them to reflect upon religious thoughts and increase their devotion. Before dawn, the meal that is consumed is known as Suhoor, while at dusk the fast is broken by a meal named Iftaar. 25 July, 2015 (Friday) -- Night of Destinyor Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr): This occurs during the holy month of Ramazan/ Ramadan. Devotional readings and prayers mark the observances of this holy night. 28 July, 2014 (Monday) -- Eid-Ul-Fitr (end of Ramadan): Literally meaning “The Festival of Breaking the Fast”, Eid-Ul-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, that is, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar.
