BARINGO CENTRAL, CDF COMMITTEE AND SAMMY KOMEN SAMWUEL MWAITA! WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT ORPHANS AND WIDOWS! Being a Sunday morning, let me share what the Bible tells us and wants us to know about orphans and widows as well as the less privileged/oppressed in our societies. I begin by definition; Widows are women whose husbands have died, and orphans are children whose parents, for whatever reason, are not in the child’s life. In biblical times, the main cause of a child being orphaned is that the orphan’s parents had died. The Bible reveals God’s attitude toward orphans and widows: He cares very deeply for them. God commands us to protect and care for orphans and widows (Psalm 82:3). He says Vindicate the weak and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and destitute. Husbands and fathers play an irreplaceable role in a family. When the man is not there, the wife and child can suffer in many ways. The Bible tells us that God Himself steps in to fill the role of protecting and caring for orphans and widows. “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling” (Psalm 68:5). In our world, those who are helpless tend to be taken advantage of by those who think they can get away with it. However, nothing escapes God’s notice, and He will avenge the orphans and widows. “You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror” (Psalm 10:17–18). Kenya and Kenyans have taken up the responsibility of taking care of the orphans, the widows and the oppressed/less privileged in our society by many measures including the CDF kitty. Deuteronomy 26:12-13 However, there are those who think they can take advantage of this group that the Bible tells us that Gods deeply cares for. God commands us to care for orphans and widows. When He gave the Law to Moses and the Israelites, He gave instructions for how to treat the orphans and widows among them—with harsh consequences promised if they failed in their responsibility (see Exodus 22:22–23). To the CDF Committee and the MP Sammy Mwaita, I leave you with Isaiah 10: 1-4 Woe to those who enact evil statutes And to those who constantly record unjust decisions, So as to deprive the needy of justice And rob the poor of My people of their rights, So that widows may be their spoil And that they may plunder the orphans. Now what will you do in the day of punishment, And in the devastation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? And where will you leave your wealth? To the people of Baringo Central, the Bible prophesised in Isaiah 1:23 Your rulers are rebels And companions of thieves; Everyone loves a bribe And chases after rewards They do not defend the orphan, Nor does the widows plea come before them. On dont be fat, do not be sleek, do not excel in the deeds of the wickedness and plead the cause of the orphan, that they may prosper and defend the rights of the poor (Dont be like what the Bible detests in Jeremiah 5:28). I encourage every Christian to use all channels possible (the courts, the Anti-Corruption Agency, Ombudsman, voting against them and all other avenues to champion for those in our midst who are aggrieved by the actions and the inactions of Baringo Central Constituency Committee and its Patron). We should not view caring for orphans and widows as simply a command from God we must fulfill “or else.” There is tremendous blessing in practically serving and standing up for orphans and widows. In considering what our own attitude should be toward the orphans and widows around us, it’s helpful to remember that all of us were once orphans, spiritually speaking, but we were adopted into God’s family through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:3–7). Just as it was God’s pleasure to do this for each of us, it is our joy and privilege to partner with God in loving, serving, and protecting the orphans and widows among us.
