BART, like Muni, is preparing to replace its entire vehicle fleet. - TopicsExpress

BART, like Muni, is preparing to replace its entire vehicle fleet. This article provides a nice overview. BARTs fleet is 42 years old, and it shows. BART doesnt have enough vehicles, the vehicles require too much maintenance and break down too much, and the vehicles dont meet the needs of a system thats quadrupled in ridership since its inaugural ride in 1972 (from 100,000 to over 400,000 daily trips). BART is integral to the success of our regional transit system, and it matters a lot to San Francisco. We all need to support the agency as it moves forward with its long overdue modernization. (And, of course, BART needs to get it together and commit to late night train service. We are working on that tough nut.)
