BASICS OF BUSINESS EDP FOR SC/ST STUDENT OF ENGG,MBA, PHARMA,POLYTECNIC About DICCI The Pune-based Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DICCI) is Ten years’ old. Its Chairman Mr. Milind Kamble, a Civil engineer, founded and runs it with the help of a few state chapters. Its membership base is increasing as more Dalit and Tribal entrepreneurs are joining its arm. Surprisingly, the activities of its members are quite diversified. For example, they are in sectors such as export-import, services, construction, plastics, textiles, pest control, metals and metallurgy, offshore exploration, solar energy, sugar, ethanol production, health care and hospitality industries, etc. DICCI’s tag line explains its philosophy and its entire raison d’être: “Be Job Givers and Not Job Seekers” The Chamber operates with a three-fold mandate: Bring together all Dalit and Tribal entrepreneurs under one umbrella Become a one-stop Resource Center for existing and aspiring Dalit and Tribal entrepreneurs Promote entrepreneurship among Dalit and Tribals as a solution to their socio-economic problems Challenges for DICCI As we chart out the future course of action, we confront many challenges in terms of fostering entrepreneurship among the community a) availability of early-stage funding; b) Creating professional Entrepreneurship Development Programs (EDPs) tailored for their needs without ignoring their social setting, and; c) helping existing Dalit entrepreneurs scale up their operations and grow: A) The legacy model of ‘collateral based lending’ preferred by traditional Financial Institutes creates an entry barrier to the Dalits as they rarely possess assets that can be collateralized. However, it is not clear how far it will be feasible to create an ‘early stage funding Venture Capital mechanism’ as an alternative. B) Establishing EDPs as professionally run programs, not exclusively for Dalits (to avoid ghettoization). C) Creating / accessing professional funds that can invest in Dalit businesses that are on the growth trajectory. A more nebulous issue for DICCI is how to create/ prescribe benchmarks for its members in terms of how and from where to access capital and pitfalls thereof, and where to turn for advice and mentoring as knowledge-gap on the contours of globalized capitalism is too wide both in DICCI and among its members. Context DICCI provides institutional support to Dalit entrepreneurs, and strives to bring all the Dalit entrepreneurs under one roof and acts as a resource centre for them. DICCI Mission is to encourage “Dalit entrepreneurs to be job givers rather than job seekers” and encourage Dalit ( SC/ST) Youth and women to divert towards Business instead of jobs. DICCI has been organizing a variety of Seminars, workshop and Interaction meetings with industries & Govt. agencies both at Central & State level and educates the members on latest trends, developments and opportunities in the field. In order to recognize and promote the budding entrepreneurs, DICCI is now organizing an Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP) for all the SC/ST Final year Engineering, Pharma, MBA and Polytechnic students of Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara District.
