BAXTER ................ Tammy Kemnitz-Allen and I met at Blue Bonnet vet for Dr Venetia Shafer to examine him and give him some relief. From what she could tell, Baxter definitely had an ugly compound fracture in his leg, a hip fracture, and nerve damage. He was getting around on his FRONT two legs only- picking up one leg and dragging the other. He wouldnt stand up to urinate, therefore peed on himself. Dr Shafer suggested us taking Baxter to an Orthopedic Surgeon - but that was probably going to cost in the $4000 range. We have people willing to donate and considered asking rescue groups for help. Baxter was getting restless and irritated after his pain pill was kicking in. He started passing stuff, so I carried him outside to the grass. He had a good bowel movement. When we were trying to bring him back into the clinic, Baxter became aggressive with us. We tried muzzling him so he wouldnt bite us, but he got it off really quick. It took Dr Shafer sedating Baxter so we could get him back inside. ALL DAY, he was such a darling, so this behavior caught us off guard. With all his medical needs and now dealing with a possible temperament problem, we decided to put Baxter to sleep.......... It was a difficult decision to make..... I will say- he probably had the best day of his life ! He had a corn dog, piece of a grilled cheese sandwich, fresh water, dog food, lots of love and surrounded by people that TRUELY cared about him. Before Baxter was put to sleep, we prayed over him. Baxter is now buried, wrapped in a soft blanket, on the hill on our farm with our other dogs that have passed. He may not had a home before - but he has one now - IN HEAVEN - running and playing with the animals while waiting for us to get there................ THANK YOU SO MUCH DR SHAFER and I think Tammy and I have started a special friendship
