BC in Canada provides employment opportunity for Punjabis: Kanwar Sandhu Two days ago, the Premier of the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC), Christy Clark, was in India and during her visit, she also came to Chandigarh and Punjab. While in Punjab, she made an important announcement which should bring some relief to the unemployed youth in the state. She said that since Indian Oil Corporation was setting up a natural gas plant in BC, there would be about 1 Lakh job avenues that would open up. Since there are lots of Punjabis in that province, she would prefer skilled labour from here. The kind of skilled labour BC is looking for includes plumbers, welders, mechanics and electricians, besides engineers. Since there are hardly any employment opportunities in Punjab, this is a great opportunity which Punjab Government should try and encash upon for its people. To avoid people from wasting their money on private trainers, the Government should reach out to the BC Government, asses the exact demand and set up training and immigration centres in the state. This is the least the government can do. Also, to prevent the Punjabi immigrants from being victims of hate crime, the people who would be put through the training should also be given some basic training in the English language and social etiquettes. This is not to suggest that they give up their traditions and their identity. This would help them assimilate with the locals there and avoid any tension.
