BE A THINKING RUNNER Youtube: Rod Dixon 1983 NY Marathon Finish youtube/watch?v=llfcZUyTJGA The 1983 NY City Marathon provides an excellent example of how inner dialogue can influence individual performance. Geoff Smith, an englishman, led for most of the race. Within approximately 300 meters of the finish line, Rod Dixon, a New Zealander, passed Smith and won the race. Dixons success may have been aided by his cognitive strategy. According to Newspaper reports Dixon stated, With a mile to go I was thinking, A milers kick does the trick, and Ive got to go, Ive got to go. In contrast, Smith is reported to have said, My legs have gone. Later Smith noted, I was just running from memory. I thought I was to stumble and collapse. In fact, he did collapse at the finish line. Think more productively by focusing on what you want to happen as opposed to what you do not want to happen.
