BE AWARE!: The stakes are high. Iowas rivers and lakes have among the hightest nitrogen and phosphorus levels found anywhere. Last year, this pollution problem put safe drinking water for half a million Iowans at risk, and it clogs many of Iowas top recreational lakes with harmful algal blooms each summer. If the language currently in HF2458 becomes law, however, local information about this problem would be excluded from public review. To make matters worse, lawmakers have proposed additional secrecy as they are preparing to invest millions of additional taxpayer dollars in the all-voluntary pollution reduction efforts that have so far failed to protect rivers, lakes, and drinking water.
