BE PREPARED FOR COLD WEATHER Oakridge Public Schools monitor - TopicsExpress

BE PREPARED FOR COLD WEATHER Oakridge Public Schools monitor the weather conditions closely. We utilize all information available to make decisions related to delaying or cancelling school or events. Such monitoring includes traveling roads ourselves, watching TV and web based weather reports, communicating with local districts, and monitoring the boilers in each building. Even snow removal services are monitored to see if we can operate school or events safely. Cancelling school or events is a complex decision rarely relying on a single factor. When wind chill is a factor to consider, we generally rely on the National Weather Service Wind Chill Index (see link/chart below) to guide school closing decisions related to wind and temperature at the 30 minutes to frostbite levels. In other words, if a combination of sustained winds and temperatures fall to the level that exposure to such conditions for 30 minutes would likely cause frostbite, school would be closed or delayed for the day. Again, all factors are considered before closing school. Please take proper safety precautions regardless of whether school is in session. Kids should dress in layers with warm coats, hats, mittens/gloves, and winter boots. Student achievement is a top priority second only to the safety and well being of staff and students. Whenever possible, decisions to cancel or delay the start of school will be made by 6:00 a.m. but we will communicate if school is cancelled as soon as feasible. Winter has begun, again. : ) Stay safe and stay warm, Tom Livezey Superintendent nws.noaa.gov/om/winter/windchill.shtml
