BEAUTIFUL BECKY! Another new arrival is Becky, the very heavily pregnant Jersey cow! Becky is an A2 registered Jersey, and coming up 7 years old. She is petite, as are most Jerseys and so was getting a bit tossed about amongst the big commercial Guernsey herd, who she lived with. She is due end of July/August and needed a home to retire as a house cow. At first I was alarmed at her boney rear end, but she is in perfect health and has been very well cared for by experienced Jersey/Guernsey owners. He pointed out all her bones that would show if she was under and explained that Jerseys can often appear boney in the rear and full in the belly, none of which were visible or feel-able. She is tame, knows her name and didnt mind sharing hay when Gypsy wandered across. It seems she isnt bothered by free ranging roosters either! Lol We intend to milk Becky by hand, and look forward to making our own butter, cheese, ice-cream & yoghurt on the farm, and of course the whey is fantastic for feeding the pigs. Her owner also advised how we could milk either early morning, or end of the day... but we have opted for the morning. 6am starts for us from now on, ... but oh, it will be so worth it! We will let her keep her calf and will milk share so she does not pine for her baby, until weaned naturally and available for adoption. We have let Becky settle in first, then we move her to the top paddocks to rotate grazing with Galaxy our other Jersey who is still growing. We are so excited at experiencing our first calf to be born on the farm. Becky is in calf to an A2 Guernsey bull, much bigger than Jerseys who have a unique ability to warp the male DNA to suit their birth canal, ensuring Jerseys rarely have birthing problems. Her previous owner said you can even put a Jersey to a Belgium Blue and they will have no problems birthing - amazing! We have two months to erect a milking stall..... exciting times! ;) Welcome to Little Acres Becky!
