BEAUTY OF CHRISTMAS The beauty of Christmas is the image of the God who comes. God arrives in bleak mid-winter as a little vulnerable infant. It is a startling sight: a God who is gentle and vulnerable. A God who is dependent, defenceless and fragile. There is something in the presence of an infant that evokes tenderness and innocence in even the hardest heart. The divine child calls forth our affections and tenderness. This is not a god who would judge or threaten us. In this Holy season we are embraced and healed. A new tranquillity finds us. We begin to discover within us a forgotten tenderness towards ourselves. Much of our negativity abates and we enter into that place of joy and peace that is hidden in our hearts. Meister Eckhart speaks of that place in the soul which time nor space, nor sorrow, nor distress can ever enter. At Christmas the place of divine affection within us becomes apparent. We come in home to our own silent eternity. The childlike side of the heart awakens.
