BEING A PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED BY COMRADE ESSON BAKO, NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT, NASARAWA STATE STUDENTS ASSOCIATION (NASSA) CTC ON 16TH JANUARY,2014. I wish to humbly express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, His Execellency, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura for his on-going transformation agenda in the state especially the educational sector. This has clearly shown in the following areas: 1. The approval of 2012/13 scholarship screening exercise which is currently on-going. 2. Construction of modern primary and secondary schools across the 13 local government areas of the state. 3. Constitution and subsequent inauguration of the members of Governorning Council of the state tertiary institutions (College of Education, Akwanga, College of Agriculture Lafia, Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia). 4. Establishment of Special School for the disables in the state. 5. Declaration of free education from primary to secondary levels in the state. However, while I appreciate him for the above gestures, i call on I to look into the following with urgent attention. 1. Reconsider his decision to pay the Nigerian Law School Students fifty thousand naira (N50,000) as their scholarship. I still maintain that five hundred thousand naira (N500,000) should be given to each student. 2. Construction of additional hostels in both our state secondary and tertiary institutions. 3. Provision of additional modern lecture facilities and libraries in both our secondary and tertiary institutions. 4. Convocation of students of our state tertiary institutions especially College of Agriculture Lafia, College of Education Akwanga, Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia. 5. Fencing and provision of additional security in our tertiary institutions especially College of Agriculture, College of Education Akwanga. 6. Settlement of staff union disputes and provision of better welfare conditions for the staff of primary, secondary and tertiary institutions of the state to avoid staff industrial action. 7. Employment of additional staff at all the state primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. Finally, I call on his Excellency, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura to call on the contractor(s) handling the ongoing construction of roads in Nasarawa State University Campus to fasten their work or use his constitutional power to revoke the contract and hand it over to a better and suitable contractor(s) that can handle the job within a shortest period of time. I urge the governor to ensure that the on-going scholarship screening exercise and the planned free education from primary to secondary schools in the state are realized. Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta. Signed: Comrade Esson Bako, National Vice President, NASSA (CTC).
