BELGRADE , Serbia ( AP ) - Hundreds of Serbs protested on Saturday over plans for the Serbian Orthodox Church and nationalist leaders to move the ashes of the scientist and engineer Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade her to the largest church in the nation. Tesla, Serbian origin but born in Croatia, was a pioneer in the application of electricity , wireless communication , radio and X-ray technology , in rivalry with Thomas Edison. Tesla died in New York in 1943. Carrying placards claiming Let Tesla quiet ! The demonstrators blocked traffic in front of the museum, where the urn containing the remains of Tesla has been exposed for six decades. Protesters , including many scientists , they want the ashes stay where they are. Tesla is not a saint to be buried in a church . It was scientific , said Boro Sikimic , a pensioner . Tesla is not ours only to us but to the whole world, interjected Ana Jovanovic , art historian . Serbia and Croatia have claimed paternity of Tesla , although the scientific spent most of his life in the United States. According to the wishes of Tesla , belongings , documents and urn were moved from New York to Belgrade in 1951 to be exhibited in a new museum in tribute to his work. The ecclesiastical authorities and nationalists want their ashes are deposited in the St. Sava Temple in Belgrade and buried and they are not displayed . They have insisted that the remains should be buried with national honors . Organizers said during the protest that will challenge in court any attempt to move the urn.
