BELLY RUBS are important! Teach your dog to roll over and reward with a good scratch right in the middle below the rib cage. They love it and will usually play the air guitar with a back leg! But besides them loving it, you can also check for fleas on the belly and on your female dogs, check the mammary glands for any lumps. Mammary tumors are not uncommon and while over 50% are benign, catching the cancerous ones early often means the difference between if the cancer has spread (to the lungs usually) or if you get it before it metastasizes (spreads to other organs). If you find a lump on or near a mammary gland, get your dog in to have it removed ASAP. We have personally had a couple dogs of our own this was done with and all were caught relatively early.
