BEST ALLY IN THE REGION? Those who know me on fb know I have advocated allying with Iran and Assads Syria against ISIS, Saudi Arabia and also unfortunately against Israels support for the Sunni regimes of the region. Though I think we should support the survival of Israel, its expansionist policies will go nowhere. Idem those of Saudi Arabia which additionally is as fundamentalist as ISIS. The main reason I believe this realignment would be useful is that as Shites, a persecuted minority, both Irans and Al Assads regimes are unlikely to pursue widespread policies of persecution against the Sunnis. The opposite is true of the Sunnis. If a fundamentalist Sunni regime, an ISIS or Saudi controlled one would not be much different, came to power in the region, either would in all likelihood continue the current persecutions ISIS practices, sowing more death and instability on an even wider scale as the persecuted Shite minorities would be obliged to continue to fight for their lives. Both ISIS and the conservative Wahabis that control SA have shown this policy predilection through numerous actions. Furthermore, Shites have shown no desire to attack us, something both ISIS and even strict Wahabis seem to advocate. While Assads record on persecuting opponents is hardly good, it does not have the religious fervor of the Sunni persecutions and seems done more for survival. He has never shown himself an enemy of the West. Now the Economist, a conservative magazine, never an enemy of Israel or Saudi Arabia, gives us another reason, the increasing modernization and secularization of Iran which they, in the current special edition on Iran, say aligns perceived and real Iranian interests with those of the west. economist/printedition/2014-11-01
